DEPRESSION

"I am FREE"

Move Right to Think Right

In a study, which involved 80 adults aged 20 to 45 years who were diagnosed with mild to moderate depression, researchers looked at exercise alone to treat the condition and found:

  • Depressive symptoms were cut almost in half in those individuals who participated in 30-minute aerobic exercise sessions, three to five times a week after 12 weeks
  • Those who exercised with low-intensity for three and five days a week showed a 30 percent reduction in symptoms
  • Participants who did stretching flexibility exercises 15 to 20 minutes three days a week averaged a 29 percent decline
  • Many studies have shown that exercise in a group setting is highly effective, and new research is beginning to suggest that solitary exercise such as workouts at the gym or a daily jog can be equally helpful.

Exercise releases endorphins, endorphins make people happy. When you are happy, your depression decreases.

More and more evidence is accumulating that for most people exercise is more powerful than drugs in treating depression. For exercise though, it needs to be used like a drug and must be prescribed very carefully. Going out for a simple walk after dinner will not likely provide as much benefit as a comprehensive exercise strategy.

It is also important to make sure you have a regular supply of either fish or cod liver oil, as the animal-based omega-3 fats of DHA and EPA are probably the single most important nutrient to battling depression.

Avoiding sugar and grains will help normalize insulin and leptin levels, which is also another powerful tool in addressing depression.

Eat Right to Think Right

While many doctors reactively prescribe antidepressants to treat patients suffering from depression, it is important that you understand that there are more effective natural food alternatives.

Dietary fish and fish oil supplements are a direct source of EPA and DHA. The influence of ALA, EPA and DHA in human health has been the subject of intense research over the last three decades.

Drugs and dietary components responsible for the reversed signs of depression most likely affect mitochondria (which produce energy) in brain cells.
Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids that are considered essential because they cannot be synthesized by the human body
